Last: Introductions for the new kids. And universe number, if your world has one of those - the chalkboard maps are getting digitized. I'll start.

[Okay, that's actually funny. And he's not getting shirty about Stacia framing this as him being an information broker rather than the boss-type he's used to. Stacia rewards him with a laugh.]

Yeah, 'fun' tends to happen around the schedules and planning; unless you're the kind of person who gets for-real joy out of organizing things rather than mere satisfaction.

Anyway, what do you need science nerds for? I'm not one myself, but I make a pretty good rubber duck to explain things to.

I want to make a database to organize all the data we have on Kuk, this dimension, and our own resources. Paper isn't going to cut it.

It needs to be secure and accessible to the team, so that's going to need some workshopping.

[ if he says 'team' enough times, maybe it'll cajole all the skittish types out of their holes. ]

So we're talking computer science, not chemistry or biology or physics or, I don't know, zoology?

Mostly computer science.

Eventually, it's going to cross over with other disciplines if we can gather enough information to start making models. I'm pretty sure the magic here can augment the outdated tech of this decade if we study it right - that needs to be looked at.

[ uh oh. Scope Creep. There's a reason he has a bunch of half-finished goobers piling up everywhere rather than a few things that are finished. ]

Okay, because I know my way around a computer. Mostly hacking stuff, but I'm a bit rusty what with not having access to computers since I fell out of my reality for the first time.

Basic skills would still be useful. We're stuck doing this all by hand for a little while until I can properly automate the sorting and book scanning.

[ he is dearly missing the extroverted hologram girlie that mocks him on the job. ]

We have, like, a flatbed scanner or something, right? You're not expecting us to transcribe all the books? Because I'm a terrible transcriptionist. Any time anyone ever said I was a secretary, it was because they were trying to smuggle me into a location so that I could uncover or commit crimes.

[But if Miguel needs a sassy girlie to make fun of him while he works...]

[ he jabs a thumb at another partially finished brass/wood machine with two sets of arms, messy wiring, and a spidery arrangement of lenses.

Catalina is also skittering around in that section of the lab. ]

[Stacia spots Catalina and drops the conversation to start speaking in a talking-to-babies-or-cute-animals voice.]

Hello, baby! Aren't you just so lovely in your new exoskeleton, yes you are! You're doing such a good job!

[Aaaaand back to Miguel:]

Just to make sure, you know the tech level here isn't one that can 'read' handwriting, right? It can barely recognize sheep in a field, much less letters.

[ his palms meet his face as the realization hits him. ]

Diablos. I haven't tested the converter on hand-written books.

[ Miguel comes from a fancy future world where everything is audiovisual or typed on a synthetic screen! Handwritten things were novelties and museum items, or maybe an occasional bar note. Not actual ways to process large quantities of information. ]

[ Catalina, at least, is excited to see Stacia! Chittering and chirping, the spiderbot rushes over in a way that would be cute, except it is also somewhat akin to a cat-sized huntsman spider running across your bathroom wall.

Once she finds her place on Miguel's shoulder, she returns to being purely cute! Ontop of the new brass-and-wood chassis, she's been given a proper eyelens and pedipalps with which to keep it clean. ]

[Stacia is not unsympathetic. Technology can be a bitch, and she really is a terrible transcriptionist.
